Future of 4 students at stake

JAMMU, May: First time in the history of J&K, a gross blunder has been committed by Government Medical College, Jammu (GMC-J) by admitting 184 MBBS students against the actual intake capacity of 180 MBBS seats, thereby putting the future of four students on stake.
Notably, GMC Jammu has 150 MBBS seats recognized by National Medical Council (NMC) and with additional 30 MBBS seats permitted by the Council, the total annual intake capacity of the College is 180 MBBS seats only. However, this Academic year (2022 -2023), authorities of GMC-J wrongly made four additional MBBS admissions against total permitted seats by NMC.

Official sources told that the whole issue started with the casual and non-serious communication made by the GMC Jammu to authorities of the BOPPEE J&K regarding joining and non-joining of the MBBS seats, which as per BOPPEE authorities, was conveyed wrongly by GMC Jammu authorities vide their communication dated 20-3-2023 to it, which led to admission of extra 4 MBBS students.

Authorities of BOPPEE vide their communication dated 06-04-2023 have taken a serious note of the blunder made by GMC-J authorities and asked them to explain their position. Advising the GMC-J authorities to approach the NMC New Delhi, which is the competent authority in this matter, BOPPEE has said that the matter has been created by the office of GMC-J and its (BOPPEE) position is very firm and clear in this matter.

As per the sources, National Medical Commission has taken a serious note of this blunder and may pass adverse strictures against GMC Jammu. Further, the names of excess students admitted have not been considered valid and legitimate on the website of NMC, putting career of these four students in compromise with permanent damage.

“The four students against their merit and total available seats still continue to remain admitted in the GMC Jammu and the matter is being tried to be put under carpet by the College authorities rather than finding any remedial measure under law,” sources said, adding, recently Principal GMC-Jammu Dr Shashi Sudhan Sharma has framed a committee to look into the matter and suggest remedial measure but the fact is that the matter is beyond the competence of the local committee.

Sources further said that the career of these four students has been also put on stake by GMC Jammu authorities as the counseling for the academic year (2022-2023) has been closed and if these students are asked to vacate in between it will affect their career that too not because of their fault.

“The matter has been adversely taken by all the competent authorities like BOPPEE J&K, National Medical Commission and University of Jammu against GMC Jammu.

The matter also stand referred with the Civil Secretariat with the Department of Health and Medical Education J&K on 11-3-2023 but still no remedial action in this regard has been taken by any of these regulatory authorities including Health and Medical Education Department,” they rued.
