Asian Cricket Council (ACC) president Jay Shah on January 05 (Thursday) announced the schedule and format of the 2023 Asia Cup.

The Board of Cricket for Control in India (BCCI) Secretary revealed that the continental competition will be played in a 50-over format. The most eye-catching piece of news is that arch-rivals India and Pakistan are placed in the same group (Group 1) for the 2023 Asia Cup. The 16th edition of the Asia Cup will be played in the month of September while six teams will compete in the competition.

“Presenting the @ACCMedia1 pathway structure & cricket calendars for 2023 & 2024! This signals our unparalleled efforts & passion to take this game to new heights. With cricketers across countries gearing up for spectacular performances, it promises to be a good time for cricket!” the ACC president said in a Tweet.

Six teams have been divided into two groups. Group 1 features India and Pakistan and they will be joined by a qualifier. Group 2 features defending champions Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Afghanistan. The exact dates of the tournament are yet to be announced.

The tournament is scheduled to be hosted by Pakistan but the BCCI has already made it clear that India will not travel to the neighbouring country.

On October 18, 2022, Jay Shah affirmed that the Indian team won’t go across the border for the Asia Cup and the tournament will be held at a neutral venue.

“The Asia Cup 2023 will be held at a neutral venue. I am saying this as ACC President. We (India) can’t go there (to Pakistan), they can’t come here. In the past also, the Asia Cup has been played at a neutral venue,” Shah had said after the 91st BCCI annual general meeting in Mumbai.
