Pakistan have returned to winning ways in the T20 World Cup and have 2 wins from 4 matches. The Men in Green kicked off their campaign with a defeat at the hands of India. After that, they suffered a shocking one-run loss against Zimbabwe.

After the Zimbabwe fixture, it looked like Pakistan might find it difficult to move into the semi-final but they have made a comeback. The Babar Azam-led side defeated Netherlands in its third tie and has now pulled off a big win over ‘favourites’ South Africa. The win over SA has bolstered Pakistan’s chances and they can qualify for the knockout fixture, given that the results of other matches also go their way.

Has Pakistan’s win over South Africa impacted India’s semi-final chances as well? And what India need to do now to qualify for the semi-final?

The only thing India need to do to qualify for the semi-final and finish at the top spot in the points table is to defeat Zimbabwe on Sunday (November 6). The doors will not be closed for India even if they lose. For now, Pakistan’s win has had an impact on India’s semi-final chances.

A defeat for Pakistan would have seen them officially crash out of the tournament, making South Africa the first team from group 2 to punch their ticket to the semi-final. It would have also benefitted India as they have an NRR of +0.730, which is much better than Bangladesh’s NRR of -1.276.

With 3 teams out of contention and Bangladesh having no realistic chance, India would have practically confirmed their ticket. But Pakistan’s win over SA has delayed their progression to the semi-final.

As mentioned above, a win for India will see them qualify. But India will miss out on the semi-final spot if they lose to Zimbabwe and at the same time, Pakistan and South Africa win their last Super12 matches. In this case, India will remain at 6 points while South Africa and Pakistan will have 7 and 6 points each, respectively. Pakistan have a better NRR than India.

But the Indian fans shouldn’t worry much as the team is in form and Zimbabwe don’t pose a big threat to the Men in Blue’s hopes. The good news for India is that Pakistan and South Africa will play their last Super12 game before the inaugural champions. Hence, India will know their fate before they take the field against Zimbabwe.
