With big money comes big investing responsibilities. While mere mortals chase consistent 12% p.a returns on stocks, mutual funds and ETFs, celebrities and big businessmen invest in startups and hope to add more zeroes to their net worth every year.

While everyone knows Virat Kohli the cricketer, few know Kohli the entrepreneur. Apart from being one of the accomplished sportsmen on the planet, the captain of the Indian cricket team is also an investor in many startups spanning mobile gaming, fashion wear and fintech

Kohli began his investment journey at the age of 25, when he bought a stake in a London-based social media startup —Sports Convo for an undisclosed sum. Founded by Vishal Patel, Amrit Johal, Co-founder Investor, Praveen Reddy and Chief Designer, Jasneel Nagi, Social Convo, aims at bridging the gap between sports stars and fans.

In February 2019, the Indian cricket team captain invested in Galactus Funware Technology Pvt Limited, a Bengaluru-headquartered company, which owns the online gaming platform Mobile Premier League (MPL). The investment ran into a controversy with conflict of interest charges levied against him as the company later became the official kit sponsor and merchandise partner of BCCI’s (Board of Control for Cricket in India).

According to an Indian Express report, Kohli was allotted Compulsory Convertible Debentures for Rs 33.32 lakh in Galactus Funware Technology Pvt Ltd and in January 2020, he was named brand ambassador of MPL. Galactus is a subsidiary of M-League Pte Ltd, which is registered in Singapore.

Kohli’s investment portfolio also includes Universal Sportsbiz (USPL), a fashion startup in which he invested Rs 19.30 crore in October 2020. Sports talent management firm, Cornerstone Sport LLP, which represents Kohli also participated in the investment round. According to Corporate Ministry filings, USPL allocated 4282 shares to the two investors at a nominal value of Rs 10 and a premium amount of Rs 47,561. It is be noted that Sachin Tendulkar is also an investor in Universal Sportsbiz.

The cricket also has a stake in Bengaluru-based heath and fitness startup which owns gyms and fitness centres across the country. According to Business Standard, Kohli had invested Rs 90 crore in the company in 2015.

Who knew Kohli is also a restauranteur. Located in RK Puram, Nueva, a Muti-cuisine restaurant by Kohli serves South American food, inspirations from Portugal, Italy, Spain, Japan and other regions.

Kohli’s most talked about investment is in online insurance aggregator Digit Insurance which was valued at $3.5 billion after the recent round of funding. Virat and wife Anushka Sharma together hold 0.25% stake in Prem Watsa-based fintech company with a total investment of Rs 2.2 crore. Also, Cornerstone which represents Kohli has invested Rs 1 crore in Digit. Also, “employees of the company” have invested Rs 30 crore in the company.
